I have really enjoyed learning how to  use these new tools for the creation of my first website. Since I’ve started the process of writing lesson plans and starting to get into the classroom, I feel like a whole new side of teaching has just been opened up to me. There are so many ways to engage the students using different tools that I never would have gone out and learned about myself. Using these tools helps get student’s attention, and may reach different types of learners in a new way.

I am really excited to start as a teacher in a few years time, and be able to apply these things I’ve learned. The way the classroom works may be changing, but the students are still just as ready to learn. These are just some new ways to teach the content we’ve always taught, hopefully in a more effective way that will stay with our students. Being able to leave a video behind for the sub to show at the beginning of the day, telling the students to mind their substitute teacher. You know? Just things like that! Things that were not possible before. I’m really thankful I’ve been able to learn about these tools, and can’t wait to find ways to use them in my lesson plans.

We have had the opportunity to be exposed to lots of different types of tools through the making of our website, and there have been a few that I am going to make absolute certain I use in my future classroom. The first being Thinglink. This site is built on such a simple, innovative idea: making images interactive. The idea that you can introduce a concept through a picture, and then go into detail about it through links that you send the viewer to is such a brilliant idea. There are lots of different ways this could be used. For example, let’s say a student misses a part of class where you taught some important content and they need to get caught up. As the teacher, you could grab a relevant image and create on Thinglink to give the student what they need to catch up. A link to your soundcloud explaining the content, a link to a neat YouTube video you showed in class to explain it, a link to your piechart in infogr.am… this could be a really helpful way to help a student get caught up!

My second favorite was actually when we learned to use Soundcloud, when we made our review of different resources. This is an excellent tool that, through the use of your microphone on your laptop computer, allows the user to make and record original sound files.  I really like this tool because most tools that allow you to record like this are often complicated and I have a hard time using them, but Soundcloud is very user friendly. You can stream and listen to other’s ideas, or create and share your own. This would be an awesome way to get to know your students at the beginning of the year. Maybe you could have them each go home and record their own file answering a few questions about themselves. It would feel less formal than filling out a worksheet, because being able to talk might help put the students more at ease. Overall, great tool!

The last tool I’m going to review is called Wordle, and it is definitely a tool that will help include student’s more artistic side. This tool allows the user to type in words or short phrases about one central topic, and the site will collaborate them and essentially create a colorful, assorted word collage of all the different ideas and phrases. I could see this being used as a way of introducing a topic to a classroom. “Today in class, we’re going to learn about Lewis and Clark’s journey across America. What words on this collage do you guys see that you recognize?” It could help the students to identify their prior knowledge, and maybe help the teacher get a feel for how well the students know the topic beforehand.

In this class, we have had the opportunity to learn about a lot of different resources that I had never heard of before. They have been tools that, now that I’ve had experience with them, I can find creative ways to incorporate them into the lessons of my classroom. These resources will help future teachers engage students, reach different types of learners, and find new ways to get important information to stick with the students.

The new tool I found today is called Scoop It, and it is an interesting site for teachers to use and share their ideas and lesson plans. Although the format and layout of the site are not completely new ideas by any means, the idea of having a site like this for education definitely is. It’s basically a social blogging site, where the reader can preview snippets of blog posts (like a menu) and can look at a blog post and “Scoop It” into their list of blog posts, if they like it. It reminds me of reblogging someone’s post on sites, or repinning a pin on Pinterest; this idea that you can browse and collect things that you agree with and/or find interesting or innovative is a great tool to have!

The green post on the top right is the “Scoop It” button, where users can essentially reblog other’s thoughts and ideas.

The second tool I found is called infogr.am, and it is a site that would definitely be helpful in illustrating content for visual learners!

 

This site makes creating and sharing infographics easy and accessible.  This would really help in a classroom because it would help you make accommodations for different types of  students. For example, some students might not fully  understand a concept with each of the parts standing on their own, and they might need to see the relationship between the different ideas in the lesson before it really clicks. In this case, a pie chart or an illustration of what the concepts look like together in one infographic would really help fill in some of those gaps for learning.

Resources Wiki Review

This website, Technology Keys Resources Wiki, is a great resource for teachers to use to get to know various types of tools for the classroom. On the side (as you’ll see in the screenshot below) are categories that help divide what the viewer is looking for. For instance, if you know you’re looking for Fun with Text, you click the category and can explore what’s available for that specific section. Or if you are interested in collaborative projects, you would click the Collaboration category and explore what is left for that.

It is a great resource for aspiring teachers who are new to the profession, students (like me) who are in college and learning, or experienced teachers alike. It has a very simple format to follow and has a lot of very essential information!

Meograph Project: Creating a Resume

iframe>iframe>One of the resources we learned about this semester was called Meograph, and it is a great tool for creating slideshows, collages of pictures and video, and adding narration to a visual story. I had never heard of it before, but it is fairly easy to use! Basically the video is segmented into “moments,” and to create your video you just add a bunch of “moments” cumulatively together and they can be anything! A moment can be a photo, a video, a narration, or a comboniation of more than one of those options. It’s also a good tool because it allows the user to cite your resources for the moment as you post it – I used a public domain photo, and was able to cite it by putting the website URL right on the image in the presentation! It would be a great tool that makes sure that students don’t plagirize their materials that they use, and it could help lead into a copyright lesson, if that is in the curriculum or you think it’s necessary.

Technology Bits Bytes and Nibbles Review

My Professor for the DED 318 class at the Kansas State University College of Education has a website called Technology Bits Bytes and Nibbles that helps explain a lot of different options when it comes to resources for teaching in the classroom. Important videos of lectures, tech tips, news articles about various legislation (such as No Child Left Behind) and many resources with reviews and links included! It is a very thorough resource and can be used for both beginning teachers and experienced teachers.

Celebrate Kansas Voices

This is my favorite project from this semester! Celebrate Kansas Voices is a great collaborative effort to share rich parts of Kansas history. I loved getting to tell my story, and I told the story of how I found out I was related to Ms. Atkins of the Nelson-Atkins Museum! It’s my favorite part of my ancestry, and even more than that, I had no idea that I was independently working on becoming an artist that I had a famous ancestor who worked to preserve art and display it for all to see in Kansas City!

Fun with Text-Word Clouds

This tool is very easy to use and very visual, which is a learning style that does not get catered to as often, sometimes! I love the way it makes the ideas interactive. In my classroom, if the students were doing a research project, it would be a great introductary slide or cover page for their project to be turned in with – or if we were learning new vocabulary, we could each make one of these and post them in our cubbies where we’d see them every day.

I really like the fact that we used two different types for this post, because they have different styles of font and different formats that are interesting to look at. When reviewing concepts, these definitely catch your eye!

My first collage is about me, and just various facts about me (it is also located on my bio page here on my website, cause I liked the tool so much) and the second is all about literacy and language development.
